Sentiments Et Emotions

Regardez!

CNN Zidane Report

Speaking of Gestes, Let’s learn some!   The following is a 20 minute video, so we’ll probably just watch the first five minutes in class.

French Gestures

1) In General, the French as well as most Zidane Fans world-wide felt that Zidane was justified in head-butting the Italian player.  They forgave him for getting kicked out of the game and essentially losing the world cup to Italy.  Do you think Americans would be as forgiving? (For example, say there was a world BASKET BALL tournament, and Dirk Nowitzki played the role of Zinedine.)

2) Tell us, en FRANCAIS, what you are like quand tu perds ton sang froid.  Comment es-tu?

3) Pick two of the gestes, and try to figure out, based on the words and the body language, the general meaning of that geste.

  1. 1. Americans are definately not as forgiving. We would be so mad if Dirk blew up and lost it for us.

    3. avoir ras le bol- over my head
    Super! – awesome.
plus or moins- more or less

    001. I think Americans would definately be upset and I feel that they would blow everything way out of porportion. The story would be on the front page of every newspaper and magazine, on every tv and radio show, and the athlete would be dropped by all of his sponsors. Unfortunately, like every other negative story in America, we would hear about it for months. Ugh, why can’t we just let things go?! haha.

    3) I think the third gesture indicates that someone is really mad and I think the eighth gesture is indicating that he likes whatever he is seeing.

    1. No I do think Americans will be forgiving because if it was a chapionship game then the american fans will proberly hate that player for a while and some americans may hold a grudge with that player for a long time.

For example, here is the link about the big Ron Artest basketball fight with Ben Wallace at the pacers vs. pistons game.

    3. Super- ok and c’etait parfait- ok

  4. 1)Americans can be forgiving but it takes a while. We are very focused in winning and always coming out on top. If it was a huge important game, i believe it would be hard to forgive dirk till a few days later.
3)Avoir les boules- means have balls, so have guts.
    c’etait parfait-means it is perfect.

    1. Heck no we would be so critical. He would be the blame of our lost and people would be angry for a long time.
3.C’etait perfait it’s perfect, Zéro zero

  6. 1) No I think that they wouldnt they would be critizing him forever.

1.] No, I don’t think Americans would be as forgiving, because as a country, we are very competitive, & believe winning is the most important thing. I think we’d all talk about it, how mad we are that we lost, but how hilarious it was that the other guy got what he deserved, then eventually it would fade away.

3.] I think the first gesture, “oh la barbe!” might mean cut it out. The third one, “les doigts me démangent!” might mean evil, or something along those lines.

  8. 1) of course americans wouldn’t be so forgiving. dirk would’ve been skinned alive for pulling a stunt like that.

    3) i think “oh la barbe” means to cut it out. it seems like “avoir les boules” means to throw up (or is that just me???) and c’était parfait, obviously, means it’s perfect.

  10. 1. I think America would be less forgiving. Most would feel that one person let the whole team down and that it was selfish to not control his emotions.

    3. Oh la barb…I think this meant “get a haircut”, it looked funny. And pas question, “no question.”
